Pericardial Mesothelioma: Diagnosis

Pericardial mesothelioma is also known as mesothelioma of the pericardium or cancer of the sac that holds the heart. Your doctor may diagnose pericardial mesothelioma using a thoracoscope to perform a thoracoscopy, which might also involve opening up the chest cavity to remove the tumor.
Patients who develop excessive fluid around the heart, called an effusion, may have a sample of the fluid taken to diagnose pericardial mesothelioma.

Most medical professionals are clueless about this issue of diagnosis of asbestos related diseases. As a result most asbestos victims are misdiagnosed. Keeping this in mind Supreme Court of India has entrusted the responsibility of certifying asbestos victims to National Institute of Occupational Health (NIOH).

What is sad is that NIOH has not prepared any register of the most common disease associated with asbestos that is mesothelioma, a deadly disease, where the victims are given about 6 months to live after diagnosis.

Asbestos can also cause colon and throat cancer as well as asbestosis, which results in scarring and hardening of the lungs. Given the fact that those who are diagnosed with mesothelioma suffered unendurable pain, so much so, that their families pray for the death of the victim to bring about relief for their loved ones.
